What Is Cricket for Development?
Cricket has a remarkable ability to do things that other sports don't quite manage. It requires patience and aggression in equal measure. It rewards teams that communicate. It gives every player, whether they're facing the bowling or standing at fine leg, a role. And it creates a culture of post-match respect between opponents that is almost unique in sport.
Cricket for Development (C4D) is Ruwan Jayaratne's initiative to bring those qualities to young people in Uganda who have never had access to the game. Founded alongside Frontier Sports Safaris Ltd, C4D works with schools, youth groups, and community organisations in Mpigi, Kampala, and the surrounding area.
The programme provides basic equipment, qualified coaching, match opportunities, and - through Wild Cricket Safaris tours, the extraordinary experience of playing alongside adult cricketers from the UK, the Netherlands, the UAE, and beyond.
What We Do: The Program
| School Coaching Visits | Weekly coaching visits to primary and secondary schools across Mpigi and Kampala, led by Uganda Cricket Association-qualified coaches. |
| Equipment Donation | C4D provides bats, balls, pads, helmets, and stumps to schools and community groups with limited access to cricket equipment. |
| Community Match Days | Regular match days at Serenity Oval and local grounds give young players the opportunity to develop their skills through competitive yet supportive cricket. |
| Tour Integration | Every Wild Cricket Safaris touring group spends Day 2 participating in a community cricket session with local children, including a 70-over match, coaching stations, and a shared meal. |
